(C) Poloff discussed the upcoming OIC ministerial in the
context of Ref A with MFA Disarmament official June 15. The
official said that he expects the U.S. may find the OIC's
statement on Iran even more unhelpful than the statement
issued on Iran at the recent NAM ministerial. Specifically,
the official said he heard that Saudi Arabia had already
started to negotiate a statement that would voice support for
the right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and
reference ongoing Iranian cooperation with the IAEA.
According to the official, Saudi Arabia does not see the harm
in appeasing Iran with rhetoric as long as it does not
actively contradict the actions called for by the IAEA.
(Note: This conflicts with Ref B's more positive SAG
prediction regarding an OIC statement. End note.)
