(C) Ambassador called President Basescu (currently in
Finland) to inform him about US support for Romania's bid to
host 2008 NATO Summit (reftels). Acting DCM notified Prime
Minister Popescu-Tariceanu's chief of staff, who was very
pleased by the news. Emboff also informed the MFA's NATO
Director Mirela Maghiar who expressed "deep appreciation for
the US support" and said Romania must now work towards
consensus within the Alliance. Emboff noted that the US was
informing Lisbon and Bucharest first, before other Allies.
