¶1. (U) Per reftel instructions, PolCouns discussed the then
pending UNSCR on Lebanon with Belgian MFA Director for the
Middle East Christian Monnoyer on August 12. Monnoyer
appreciated our efforts to keep him informed.
¶2. (C) In a discussion the previous day, Monnoyer confirmed
that "very theoretical" planning was continuing at the
Defense Ministry on a possible Belgian role in a new version
of UNIFIL. He added that the eventual shape of Belgium's
participation could not be predicted. This would, he
insisted, depend primarily on the final resolution as
approved by the Security Council, and the mandate of the
beefed-up UNIFIL force. Imbrie
