1. (C) Upon receipt of reftel May 31, DCM briefed both Milan
Jezovica, Foreign Policy Advisor to Prime Minister Mikulas
Dzurinda, and Peter Kmec, Chief of Staff to Foreign Minister
Eduard Kukan. The Ambassador delivered the full demarche in
person June 1 to Acting Foreign Minister Jozsef Berenyi.
Berenyi called the U.S. action "very clever" and expressed
support for this effort to win a positive decision from Iran.
He asked about recent U.S. consultations with Russia and
China, and wondered if they were on board. He said he would
immediately consult with Kukan (who is currently in Eastern
Slovakia) about issuing a statement, and instructed his chief
of staff to draft a text based on the demarche points. We
expect that an official statement will be released as soon as
June 2, and will transmit the text.
