SUBJECT: UNESCO CONVENTION ON CULTURAL EXPRESSIONS NOT ON
THE RADAR IN SLOVAKIA
REF: STATE 19851
There are no indications of any activity in Slovakia on the
ratification of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and
Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. The GOS
has not included ratification on the 2006 legislative plan,
and there is no indication that the Ministries of Culture,
Education or Foreign Affairs are pushing for ratification.
With parliamentary elections scheduled for June 17 we do not
expect the government to take up this issue until September,
2006 at the earliest. Similarly, there has been almost no
debate in the press about the issue, even when the Treaty was
under consideration last fall.
