IAEA MEETING
REF: A. STATE 92883
B. BOGOTA 4947
Classified By: A/PolCouns Scott Hamilton; Reasons 1.4 (b,d)
In response to Ref A demarche urging the GOC to issue a
statement on Iran at the June International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors (BOG) meeting, MFA
Coordinator for Disarmament Daniel Avila said June 9 that the
GOC intended to make a statement similar to that made at the
February 4 BOG meeting, in which the GOC supported reporting
Iran to the Security Council for failure to abide by IAEA
resolutions. The GOC also intends to reiterate its June 1
statement (ref B) in support of the U.S. offer to join the
EU-3 in direct negotiations with Iran if it fully and
verifiably halts enrichment and reprocessing activities and
calling on Iran to comply with IAEA resolutions. Avila noted
there had been no USG response to the June 1 GOC statement
and said the Colombian mission in Vienna would appreciate a
readout on U.S. "impressions" of the statement. Avila had no
comment on a possible NAM statement.
