SUBJECT: FOLLOW UP ON FOREIGN FIGHTERS TO IRAQ
REF: STATE 35709
Classified By: DCM Christopher W. Murray. Reason: Sections 1.4 (b) an

(S) On March 8, Polchief accompanied by visting NEA/ELA Desk
Officer for Syria, delivered subject demarche to Ambassador
Bassam Namani, former Lebanese Ambassador to Saudi Arabia,
and current MFA Director of the Office for Arab Affairs.
Namani listened attentively to the points outlined in reftel.
He then asked if the USG had already posed these questions
to Syrian officials. After a brief discussion of U.S.-Syrian
relations, Namani agreed that cooperation on the foreign
fighters issue was in the best interest of Lebanon. He
deferred to the security services as the best interlocutor on
this issue for the USG. Namani said that he would forward
the points outlined in reftel to the appropriate security
agencies, and asked us to follow up directly with those
agencies.
