(C) Poloff contacted MFA IO Human Rights Director Dong Zhihua
on December 13 to inquire about press reports (ref A)
indicating that the Chinese Government might be preparing to
release imprisoned democracy activist and LPR Yang Jianli as
urged by the Ambassador and Massachusetts Governor Mitt
Romney in recent meetings with AFM He Yafei (Refs B, C).
Dong told poloff that there have been "no new developments"
in Yang's case. Poloff stated that the United States
Government remains prepared to assist with Yang's early
release and urged again that Yang be released now.
