(S) Poloff delivered reftel demarche to MFA Arms Control and Disarmament Department Missile Division Third Secretary Yu Dunhai on December 1, urging China to investigate quickly and fully the activities of two Iranian front companies seeking to procure missile-related equipment from Chinese firms. (Note: We were told that the Director and the Deputy Director were unable to meet us. End Note.) ¶2. (S) Yu said that he was instructed to receive the demarche, but to provide no response. Poloff reiterated that one of the shipments to Iran is imminent and requires urgent investigation. Stressing that the Iranian firms are associated with entities developing ballistic missiles in Iran, he urged China to investigate fully these cases and to share with us the results of its investigations.
