Classified By: Ambassador Charles P. Ries. Reasons 1.4(b/d).
(S) Ambassador delivered reftel demarche to Foreign Minister
Bakoyannis April 18. On April 19, IO Director Frangiskos
Verros told PolCouns that Greece, through its Ambassador in
New York, would be relaying Greek support for a U.S.-French
draft of a Chapter VII UNSCR on Iran. Greece was ready to
vote in favor of a Chapter VII resolution, if events
warranted. On sanctions, Verros said that Greece had so far
focused on multilateral discussions ongoing in the EU.
Greece agreed, he said, that sanctions -- should they become
necessary -- should be as wideranging as possible. Verros
reiterated that Greece continued to support all diplomatic
means to resolve the standoff with Iran, and called
preparations in the UNSC "a necessary part" of the diplomatic
strategy.
