On May 8, POLOFF presented to MFA Director for International
Organizations the U.S. position on the issue of smallpox
eradication and noted the importance of maintaining stock and
conducting research of the virus. Peralta told POLOFF that
he was familiar with the issue and would pass along the
reftel points to the Paraguayan Mission in Geneva. He stated
that he could not make any official comments on the GOP's
position without first discussing the matter with his
colleagues in Geneva. Post will follow-up on the issue and
will forward any response as it becomes available.
