¶1. Post delivered reftel demarche on May 17 to Almatbek
Demesinov, Head of the UN division at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs (MFA). Demesinov stated that MFA concurred with the USG
position in principle but needed to consult with the Ministry of
Health before issuing a concrete response. On May 23, Gaukhar
Ashirbekova, of the MFA's World Health Organization desk, told
Post that MFA has sent a letter to the Kazakhstani Embassy in
Geneva with instructions to support the USG's position on
smallpox repositories. Kazakhstan's Health Minister Erbolat
Dossayev and Ambassador to Switzerland Kayrat Abuseitov will be
attending the upcoming World Health Assembly conference.
