Charge hand-delivered reftel demarche to Turkmenistan's
Foreign Minister Rashit Meredov on July 21, saying it was
important the minister and President Niyazov be fully briefed
on this issue as they were preparing for the July 24-25 visit
to Turkmenistan of Iranian President Ahmadinejad. Meredov
thanked Charge but did not indicate whether or not President
Niyazov was planning to raise Iran's nuclear program during
this visit. Meredov had earlier told Charge that this would
be the first meeting between the two presidents and President
Niyazov's primary objective was to "get to know" his
neighbor.
