1. (C) We delivered reftel points on UN Security Council
Resolution 1737 regarding Iran sanctions to Aziz Sevi, MFA
Deputy Head of Section for Iran, on December 26, and left
reftel paragraph 5 as a non-paper. Sevi told us that the MFA
had completed a full translation into Turkish of the text of
the resolution, including annexes, and was preparing to
forward this to the office of the Prime Minister, as was
standard practice. Sevi assured us that Turkey will comply
with the terms of the resolution in full as it has with
previous resolutions. He was not aware, he said, if the MFA
planned to issue a statement regarding the resolution.
2. (U) Responding to journalists' questions about the
resolution, Foreign Minister Gul reportedly stated that
Turkey maintains hope for a diplomatic solution, and urged
Iran to take the resolution seriously.
