1. (C) We used the opportunity of a July 5 meeting on another
subject with Turkish Deputy Special Envoy for Iraq Fazli
Corman to raise our continuing concerns that the Iranians
will seek to hijack the Iraq Neighbors meeting being held
July 8-9 in Tehran. We noted that Iraqi FonMin Zebari shared
some of our concerns (ref d).
2. (C) Corman responded that Turkey also expects the Iranian
regime to try to use the meeting to advance its own agenda,
and that Turkish FonMin Gul would work with Zebari to keep
the meeting properly focused on Iraq-related issues. He
added that Turkey will seek to ensure that the final
ministers' declaration will be balanced and constructive.
Corman also expressed annoyance that Iran had apparently not
yet distributed a draft declaration or even an agenda to
meeting participants.
