SUBJECT: EXPLOSION IN TURKISH TOURIST AREA KILLS FOUR,
WOUNDS 25, CAUSE STILL UNCLEAR
(U) Classified by DCM Nancy McEldowney, reasons 1.4
(b) and (d).
1. (C) Summary: A June 25 explosion in the city of
Manavgat, on Turkey's south coast, killed four people, none
of them AmCits. We have received conflicting information on
whether the explosion was an accident or a bombing. End
Summary.
2. (U) On June 25, an explosion in Manavgat, on Turkey's
south coast between the tourist centers of Antalya and
Alanya, killed a Hungarian, a Russian, a Norwegian and a
Turk. Approximately 25 people were wounded, mostly Turkish
and Hungarian citizens. There were no AmCits among the
wounded.
3. (C/NF) We have received conflicting information about
whether the blast was an accident or a bombing. The Manavgat
subgovernor claimed initially a gas canister caused the
explosion. One newspaper, without citing sources, claimed it
had received reports that the explosion was the result of a
bomb in a trash container. We have heard one private report
from a security official that the explosion was a gas
canister rigged as an improvised explosive device (IED).
Another security official also reported the explosion was
caused by an IED. Other officials maintain a propane tank
exploded accidentally.
4. (U) No one has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.
Following previous incidents, the PKK or other terrorist
groups moved quickly to claim responsibility. If it was a
bomb, this would fit the pattern of the PKK-affiliated
Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (TAK),who have been responsible for
previous fatal bombings in tourist areas.
