1. (C) Further to reftel, Jordan's Energy Minister Azmi
Khreisat told Ecouns October 5 that the country's NEPCO power
company will supply the Jerusalem District Electricity
Company (JDECO) with electricity in a project which will
require two phases. The project comes at Palestinian
request, and will not be profitable for Jordan, according to
Khreisat. Rates will be set to only cover costs, but are
designed to track the fluctuating prices of the fuel used to
generate the power. Khreisat emphasized that the 20 MW of
power from the project will be supplied only to Jericho, not
to other areas of the West Bank.
2. (C) The first phase of the project will consist of
building the 132 KV line on the Jordanian side from Jordan's
existing grid to within one kilometer of the border with the
West Bank. The second phase will include upgrading a
substation on the Jordanian side. Khreisat expects the
project to be completed by summer 2007.
