On March 6 and 8, two contracted planes loaded with supplies
from UNHCR,s regional warehouse departed Amman for
flood-ravaged Tindouf, Algeria. The 372,000 pound airlift,
which included tents, blankets, plastic sheeting, mattresses
and collapsible water containers donated by UNHCR, was
jointly coordinated between the USG and the GOJ. The U.S.
Department of Defense contracted the Jordanian Armed Forces
(JAF) to conduct the operation; the JAF then sub-contracted a
private Jordanian firm to crate and load the cargo onto two
Antanov-124 aircraft, a Russian version of the U.S. Air Force
C-5. This joint effort is the most recent example of
humanitarian aid provided in a collaborative effort of the
U.S. and Jordan. Previous U.S.-Jordan joint aid efforts
include the relief supplies sent to regions of Pakistan
destroyed by earthquakes in October and November 2005
(reftels).
