(IMO) MARITIME SAFETY COMM MEETING

REF: SECSTATE 183434

1. EconOff delivered reftel demarche to two representatives
of the Ghana Maritime Authority scheduled to attend the IMO
Maritime Safety Committee meeting in Istanbul: Mrs.
Bernadette Esa Chinery-Hesse, Board Secretary; and Captain
E.B. Komeng, Maritime Security Coordinator. Both were highly
supportive of the LRIT and GMDSS programs, recognized the
importance of timely implementation, and agreed that IMO's
continued coordination seemed a reasonable option, but made
no firm commitments regarding the GoG position. They
indicated they would further research the September IMSO
Assembly vote to learn who supported its leadership of LRIT.
