1. PolChief delivered reftel demarche concerning the UN
Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to MFA
Director of International Organizations Yacub Al-Hosani on
October 10 and discussed both the substance and logistics of
UN deliberations on the topic. Al-Hosani was unfamiliar with
the declaration due to the UAE not being a member of the
Council considering the issue. He was, nonetheless,
receptive to reftel explanations and clearly understood the
U.S. position.
2. Post coordinated this demarche with the Australian
Embassy in Abu Dhabi prior to presenting it to MFA, although
the Australians had not received an instruction to make a
similar approach. It was agreed that they would, if
instructed, follow up the U.S. approach with a future
demarche. New Zealand does not have an Embassy in Abu Dhabi.
