¶1. (SBU) On June 19, Post delivered reftel demarche to the
UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On June 25, Econchief and
Econoff met with Ambassador Ali al-Zarouni, Director of
European, American and Oceanic Affairs at the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs to follow up. Econchief urged the UAEG to
encourage Nigeria to marshal its forces to stop the
transmission of polio. Econchief also requested that the
UAEG send two qualified observers to Nigeria to observe one
of the upcoming immunization campaigns to promote high
quality immunization efforts. Ambassador al-Zarouni said he
would pass the request on to Ministry of Health officials,
but made no other commitment. He suggested that the U.S.
should have a charismatic person, such as either former
President Clinton or President Carter spearhead a public
awareness campaign to eradicate polio.
