E.O. 12958: DECL: 03/31/2016
TAGS: PREL MARR PHSA SO AE
SUBJECT: TRANSIT OR TEMPORARY DETENTION OF SOMALI PIRACY
SUSPECTS
REF: STATE 46195
Classified By: AMBASSADOR MICHELE J. SISON, REASONS 1.4 (B) AND (D).
(C) On the margins of a March 28 meeting with CENTCOM
Commander General Abizaid, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh
Mohammed bin Zayed indicated that the UAE Government would
not be able to assist the U.S. in the case of nine Somali
suspects discussed reftel. Separately, the UAE has been
providing medical care to two suspected Somalis pirates
wounded in the March 18 engagement between U.S. naval vessels
and Somali pirates off the coast of Somalia. The exit
strategy for the two Somalis is unclear; we expect that this
will make more difficult any future responses on such
requests.
