UNCLAS TEGUCIGALPA 001203 SIPDIS FOR IIP/G/WHA AND IIP/T/ES, FOR WHA/PDA, WHA/USOAS, AND WHA/CEN E.O. 12958: N/A TAGS: OIIP PREL KPAO PGOV KDEM HO SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION ON THE OAS, JUNE 06, 2005 ¶1. On 06/06, the San Pedro Sula-based liberal daily "Tiempo" carried an op-ed by Pedro A. Brizuela entitled "Another link in the Latin American Chain Broken." "Lucio's ouster from Ecuador evidences the failure of the traditional governments in Latin America and the systematic crisis is so `sharp stabbing' that the people conclude where the origin of evil comes from and which is the solution to apply." "Bolivia, Argentina and Ecuador governmental ousters have been done by the popular forces. There have been other experiences via the electoral path in Chile, Venezuela, Brazil and Uruguay; the chain will continue to break by the links that weaken." "This is a general crisis; but the OAS has been unused as a clubbing instrument of North American politics. That is why the OAS has been paralyzed, unable to do anything in Ecuador and I don't think that the Ecuadorian people will allow the OAS to interfere with national issues." "All this indicates that the Ecuadorian people wish for their own government and will fight until they find it. No doubt the South Americans are tired of false promises, that is why they search for their own democracy. The power of the people, for the people and by the people." Palmer
