(U) In response to reftel request for industry-wide data on production and export of C20000-series brass sheet and strip, Post contacted the Ministry of Productive Activities (MPA) and the National Association of Non-Ferrous Metals Industries (ASSOMET). While they were unable to provide us with information to answer all reftel questions, ASSOMET was able to provide the following export data. ¶2. (U) Italian production of brass sheet and strip classified under Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States subheadings 7409.21.00 and 7409.29.00: 1999 - 45,700 tons 2000 - 54,400 tons 2001 - 47,400 tons 2002 - 38,700 tons 2003 - 40,950 tons 2004 - 42,250 tons 2005 - data not yet available ¶3. (U) Italian exports of brass sheet and strip classified under Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States subheading 7409.21.00: 1999 - 8,584 tons exported. 18 tons exported to the U.S. 2000 - 11,932 tons exported. 68 tons exported to the U.S. 2001 - 12,046 tons exported. 36 tons exported to the U.S. 2002 - 11,171 tons exported. 53 tons exported to the U.S. 2003 - 12,771 tons exported. 13 tons exported to the U.S. 2004 - 13,833 tons exported. No exports to the U.S. 2005 - 18,180 tons exported. No exports to the U.S. Please note that 2005 figures are for the period January - August. ¶4. (U) Italian exports of brass sheet and strip classified under Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States subheading 7409.29.00: 1999 - 10,673 tons exported. 200 tons exported to the U.S. 2000 - 11,529 tons exported. 109 tons exported to the U.S. 2001 - 10,516 tons exported. 135 tons exported to the U.S. 2002 - 9,213 tons exported. 177 tons exported to the U.S. 2003 - 9,057 tons exported. 72 tons exported to the U.S. 2004 - 8,294 tons exported. 85 tons exported to the U.S. 2005 - 12,584 tons exported. 104 tons exported to the U.S. Please note that 2005 figures are for the period January - August. ¶5. (U) According to ASSOMET, the list of Italian producers and/or exporters of brass contained in reftel is accurate. However, neither ASSOMET nor MPA keeps records of production capacity, capacity utilization, home market shipments, or finished inventories held by brass producers/exporters. Individual company figures for quantity and value of sales is only available from the companies themselves, and may have been provided by them in response to USITC questionnaires. SPOGLI
