(S) The GOI has accepted the offer to have a briefing on Iran's weaponization program (Ref A),MEA Joint Secretary (Americas) Dr. S. Jaishankar told A/DCM on August 31. However, because of sensitivities about the visit of Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, to New Delhi, August 30-31 on the eve of Foreign Minister Natwar Singh's first visit to Iran, Sept 2-5, Jaishankar asked that the US briefing be scheduled for September 5. MEA Joint Secretaries for the Americas (Jaishankar); Disarmament and International Security (Hamid Ali Rao); and Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran (Dilip Sinha) would likely attend the briefing. ¶3. (S) Mission will also request a debriefing from MEA on Larijani's visit. ¶4. (S) Action Request: Please confirm that the team is available on September 5.
