3. Saturday, December 10, 2005
-- Moderate professor of political science at Kuwait
University Dr. Ibrahim Al-Hadban wrote for moderate Al-Rai
Al-Aam under the title "Did Romania get paid for the
American detention camps?" "The United States signed an
agreement with Romania last Tuesday, December 6 allowing the
American army to use Romanian military bases and camps. The
importance of this agreement emanates from its timing as it
comes at a period when human rights organizations are
accusing the CIA of using military bases in Romania and
other European countries as detention and torture camps for
Arabs and Muslims suspected of terrorist activity since the
September 11 attacks and until today. Romania is the country
that joined NATO in 2003 with American support and aims to
join the European Union in 2007. It now has an agreement
with the American army to allow them to use its military
bases and the question still remains, was this agreement the
price of its silence about the existence of `black sites' on
its soil? The coming days will tell."
