1. (C) In a January 17 meeting with MFA Undersecretary
Khaled Al-Jarallah, Ambassador asked if Jordanian Prime
Minister Faisal Al Fayez had requested renewed assistance
from Kuwait during his recent visit (ref A). The
Undersecretary said that the Prime Minister did not/not ask
for more aid in his meeting with Kuwaiti Prime Minister
Shaykh Sabah. "He may have asked in the car," Al-Jarallah
quipped, "but if something was raised with Shaykh Sabah, we
would know." Al-Jarallah noted that Minister of Energy
Shaykh Ahmed Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, who was not present during
Shaykh Sabah's meeting with Al Fayez, had also asked whether
the Jordanians had requested more assistance; Al-Jarallah
told him that they had not.
2. (C) Al-Jarallah said almost all the discussion focused on
Iraq, with the Jordanian Prime Minister most worried about
the Iranian role there. In response to a Jordanian request
to coordinate against this threat, Shaykh Sabah advised that
this be handled through intelligence channels and include
others in the GCC. Jordan's Prime Minister responded that he
had raised it with the Saudis and would also do so on his
next stop in U.A.E.
