1. (S) Pol Chief discussed reftel points March 14 with MFA
Assistant Under Secretary for Political Affairs Tariq Al
Haidan. Al Haidan said that MFA officials have spoken to the
Iranian ambassador advising Iran not to interfere in Iraq's
domestic affairs, but explained that the Iranians have a
different perspective on the Iraqi political situation.
"They say they are not interfering in Iraq. They say that
they are helping the Iraqi government, and that they
(Iranians) are very satisfied with the results of democracy
in Iraq," Al Haidan said.
2. (S) The UAE wants to support Iraq and the democratic
process there, Al Haidan said. "We look forward to seeing a
stable Iraq, free of the terrorism we see there every day."
Al Haidan also said that the UAE leadership believes that
Iyad Allawi can play an important role in reconciling the
different political tendencies. He said the USG should play
a "behind-the-scenes" role in bringing the parties together.
