1. (U) UAE officials remain staunchly committed to stemming
the flow of counterfeit auto parts, and they routinely
publicize their efforts against counterfeit dealers. A
February 27 news article in a local newspaper detailed police
and law enforcement actions against counterfeit auto parts
dealers in Dubai. Acting on a tip from Rouse & Company (a
firm that represents four Japanese car manufactures) Dubai
police seized five trucks loaded with 45,000 oil and fuel
filters. The police arrested an unidentified number of
people and sentenced them to a month in jail.
2. (U) This article is one example specific to the auto parts
industry that demonstrates UAEG willingness to act and
publicize their efforts against counterfeit auto part
distribution. UAE authorities recognize that counterfeiting
is a problem, and by publicizing raids such as the one
described above, they raise awareness of the penalties for
dealing counterfeit goods. As stated in Ref B, post strongly
recommends that the UAE not be included on the Special 301
Watchlist, and we highlight this article as a recent specific
response to the International Anti Counterfeiting Coalition's
concerns about counterfeit auto parts in UAE.
