Her area of expertise is human rights and international criminal law with respect to international security issues, in particular the International Criminal Court. Through Clingendael, Ms. Boot- Mathijssen organizes courses in these areas for Dutch and foreign government officials, police and military. Most recently she is responsible for a course on international relations for senior Dutch law enforcement officers, which Clingendael hopes to offer annually. Ms. Boot-Mathijssen is and will continue to be in a position where she is asked about US policies and perspectives with respect to human rights, counter terrorism and international law. She is eager to understand US positions but has little direct US experience. She is particularly interested in human rights laws and global security issues with respect to counterterrorism, and the issues of safeguarding civil and political rights versus national security. A professional US program would add the realistic perspective to the extensive academic knowledge she already has of the US. Jules has also been an important interlocutor on Iraq- related issues especially with locating and repatriating to Iraq assets of the former Iraqi regime. His career pattern shows increasing responsibility and expertise in foreign security and economic policies. His acceptance into this international visitors program would increase his understanding of the key factors that shape U.S. foreign policy and his ability to reflect that understanding in his policy formulation efforts within the Dutch government and in the European Union.
