(C) Foreign Minister Shaykh Dr. Mohammed Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah told Charge June 7 that Jordanian King Abdullah had not/not discussed oil during his June 1 visit to Kuwait (other topics septels). (NOTE: the local media reported that the King had said Kuwait had renewed for six months the provision of 25,000 bpd oil or equivalent. END NOTE.) ¶2. (C) The discussions had gone very well, according to the Minister; the bilateral relationship is now very good and getting better. The King had played Kuwait's political scene adeptly, pardoning a Kuwaiti and taking a personal interest in the safety of Kuwaiti students who have faced assault and battery in Jordan. ¶3. (C) The two sides signed an MOU to resume Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) activity in Jordan. Kuwait will participate in a power project and is looking at other possible projects. The Minister said he did not know whether the power project was for the domestic market or to supply Iraq, or both. Dr. Mohammed also noted that Kuwait still has a $100 million deposit in Jordan's Central Bank. ¶4. (C) COMMENT: We would be interested in Embassy Amman's readout, especially any Jordanian claim of an understanding regarding continued provision of oil. URBANCIC
