1. (SBU) PolOff presented ref A points to Department of
Palestinian Affairs Director Abdulkarim Abulhaija on August
2, and noted that Charge had discussed the issue with Foreign
Minister Muasher (ref B). Abulhaija promised to give it
serious thought and consult with Muasher about possible
candidates in the near future. Abulhaija appreciated
recognition of the need to identify a candidate with
expertise in the region, and said a non-American may be
preferable given the difficult political climate. He
promised to provide feedback on this matter in the near
future.
