Classified By: Ambassador Edward Gnehm for reasons 1.5 (b),(d).
1. (C) PolCouns and PolOff covered ref A and B points on the
revised draft text of the new UNSCR on Iraq and supporting
the Iraq Interim Government (IIG) June 2 with Ali Al-Ayed,
Director of the Foreign Minister's Private Office. Al-Ayed
said that the GOJ was pleased with the selection of Ghazi Al
Yawer as the new President and characterized the IIG members
as a "pretty good group of people". The GOJ, he said, was
pleased that none of INC leader Ahmad Chalabi's people appear
to have been included in the IIG. He asserted that Al
Yawer's selection left a positive impression on the role of
the coalition in the process, and it gave the coalition more
credibility given that Adnan Pachachi (widely believed to be
the coalition's choice) did not become President. The press
also reported June 2 Jordan FM Marwan Muasher's statement
that the GOJ "welcomed" the choice made by the IGC.
2. (C) PolCouns and PolOff also shared the revised draft text
of the new UNSCR on Iraq with Al-Ayed. He said that the
revised language demonstrated more clearly the sovereignty of
Iraq.
3. (U) Baghdad minimize considered.
