DCM delivered reftel talking points to MFA Assistant Under
Secretary for Political Affairs Ambassador Tariq Al Haidan

on August 18. Al Haidan took on board our points,
commenting that the draft Syrian statement was "very
tough." But he also stated that dealing with Syria was a
sensitive issue. He noted that the NAM statements are the
result of a consensus and did not expect that it would be
possible to delete the Syrian statement entirely. However,
Al Haidan said that the UAE delegation would work with the
Arab Group and "do our best" to shape the statement. He
expected that, in the end, the Syrian statement would not
be as strong as the Syrians had proposed.
