(U) Jordanian Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Director General Hanna Najjar informed us August 22 that he fully expects state-owned carrier Royal Jordanian Airlines (RJ) will be able to comply with the FAA regulation on reinforced cockpit doors by April 9, 2003. RJ is currently in the process of replacing its fleet of older Airbus aircraft which do not have reinforced cockpit doors. Najjar said he had informally discussed with TSA the possibility of a temporary waiver or extension if one or two of the older planes have not been replaced by the deadline. Najjar said he had discussed with TSA the possibility of taking into consideration for a temporary waiver the deployment of armed sky marshals outside the cockpit on all RJ flights. BERRY
