(S) In Separate October 11 meetings, Ambassador Jeter
delivered the demarche on Al-Qaida threats to U.S. economic
interests (reftel) to National Security Advisor Aliyu
Mohammed and Managing Director of the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Jackson Gaius-Obaseki. Both
Mohammed and Obaseki said that they took the threats very
seriously. Obaseki suggested bringing representatives from
the petroleum companies to Abuja for security discussions
with the relevant GON agencies. Mohammed said he would
brief President Obasanjo following the meeting with the
Ambassador.
