SUBJECT: Cameroon Distracted Driving Demarche

On January 27, DCM delivered reftel demarche on distracted driving
to Secretary General at the Ministry of External Affairs Sebastien
Foumane. Foumane acknowledged that there is a problem with driving
while using cell phones and noted that the Ministry of
Transportation has ongoing awareness campaigns to encourage safer
driving.

On February 5, Emboff delivered reftel demarche to Secretary
General of the Ministry of Transport, Jean-Pierre Soh. Soh said
his ministry is aware of the hazards that distracted driving
represents and that his ministry is preparing a series of laws that
will prevent people from driving while speaking on the phone,
texting messages, or practicing other dangerous driving behavior.
He also said the government will continue to sensitize the public
about these concerns in future road accident awareness campaigns.
He confirmed that the government has not kept statistics tracing
the origin of accidents in general, including for distracted
driving.
