1. (U) Poloff met with Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) officials
on February 24 to discuss El Salvador's support for the UN
Commission on Narcotic Drugs vote to increase control over illicit
amphetamine precursor phenylacetic acid. Egriselda Gonzalez of
MFA's Multilateral Affairs Office told Poloff that El Salvador
supports whatever mechanism is necessary to combat illegal drug
trafficking, and in that spirit, they support reftel request.
However, before MFA can provide an official response, the
Ministries of Health, Defense, and Security must weigh in.
2. (U) Gonzalez informed Poloff on February 25 that the MFA
forwarded its request to Andres Alexander Ramirez of the National
Antidrug Commission, who is the appropriate official to respond to
this matter. We will follow up with Ramirez.
