1. On January 27, PolOff delivered reftel A demarche to the MFA's
Officer for UN Issues, Egriselda Gonzalez. Gonzalez expressed the
GOES's appreciation for the USG's support to the earthquake
recovery in Haiti and noted that GOES post-quake aid to Haiti has
included 23 rescue, police and aid workers and a small shipment of
food, water and blankets. According to Gonzalez, the
French-Salvadoran UN official Gerardo Le Chevalier, who was
reportedly inside the UN building when it collapsed, remains
missing. All 29 of the other Salvadorans known to be in Haiti at
the time of the quake have been accounted for. Separately,
National Civilian Police (PNC) Director Carlos Ascencio told the
Charge on January 25 that he was proud of the performance of the
PNC contingent in Haiti, and on January 27, President Funes honored
the firemen that deployed to Haiti.

2. Comment: This positive reaction U.S. relief efforts in Haiti
echoes similar remarks by the Foreign Minister on January 25 and
will help counteract the anti-American conspiracy theories peddled
by FMLN hardliners at a public event on January 23 (see reftel B).
