1. (U) The Saudi Press Agency announced the January 3 visit
of Afghan Second Vice President Abdulkarim Khalili. Khalili
met with King Abdullah, Minister of Defense Crown Prince
Sultan, Deputy Commander of the National Guard Prince Miteb
bin Abdullah, Assistant Chief of General Intelligence Prince
Abdulaziz bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz and a number of other
princes. The purpose of Khalili's surprise visit was not
announced.

2. (C) Khalili's royal audience of military and intelligence
officials suggested that his visit was to discuss Taliban
reconciliation efforts, a topic that the Saudis are typically
tight lipped about. The SAG announcement of the meeting may
simply be a show of support for Karzai's government. End
comment.
