SUBJECT: FY2008 AMBASSADOR'S SPECIAL SELF-HELP FUND REPORT


1. Summary: In FY2008, U.S. Mission Uganda received an allocation
of $40,000 for the Ambassador's Special Self-Help Fund (SSH). The
Mission supported five projects with FY2008 SSH funding: the
restocking of fish ponds, an equipment purchase to support a
community-based poultry business, the purchase of pigs for a
community husbandry project, the funding of a community poultry
business supporting school sustainability, and the purchase of
sewing machines to expand the operations of a women's vocational
tailoring training. An estimated 5,194 Ugandans benefitted
directly from FY2008 SSH funds, and all but one of the 2008 grants
is closed. All grants issued with FY2007 funds have been closed;
updates on the last two (which were not covered in reftel) are

2. Project Number: SSH-09-617-001

-- Project Activity: Purchase a maize mill and huller (chicken
feed machinery) and fund construction of a building to house the
machinery.



The organization has been operating a small and successful poultry
project since 2002, teaching villagers how to raise chickens to
improve nutrition and income. The project will supply farmers with
affordable and a good quality feed to run their poultry projects.
The project will benefit 2700 people (1100 males and 1600 females).



-- Status: The group accounted for all funds. The project is
producing chicken feed to support its poultry rearing activities -
a model Poultry Farm that is training many community-based
organizations.




3. Project Number: SSH-09-617-002



-- Grantee: Ecumenical Joint Action Committee (EJAC) Sembabule



-- Amount Obligated: $9,000

-- Community contribution: $2,594 for labor and material.
-- Project Activity: Provide 100 households with three piglets each
(300 in total). Each piglet recipient household will be expected
to pass four piglet offspring to the project committee which will
passed to other farmers in the community. Phase one funds were
used to purchase and distribute to the community 150 piglets , the
Ambassador's wife, Susan Browning, attended the launching of the
ceremony. The second phase of the project 150 more piglets will be
distributed to the beneficiaries of the program. The project will
serve as an income-generating project through the sale of future
offspring. The project will benefit 918 Ugandans (460 males and
458 females).



-- Status: The group accounted for all funds. Farmers are awaiting
the birth of offspring that will be passed on to other project
members.




4. Project Number: SSH-09-617-003



-- Grantee: Tekwana Rural Progressive Association (TERPA)

-- Community contribution: $8,054 for material lands and transport.



-- Project Activity: Re-stock three fish ponds, purchase water
pump, nets, fish feeds and fencing the ponds. Phase one funds were
used to re-stock the ponds and to buy fish feeds. Phase two funds
will be used to purchase the water pump, the nets and for fencing
the ponds. Re-stocking the ponds will help the community expand
their existing fish farming project, generate incomes to improve
the quality of life of their community and start future income
generating projects. The project will benefit over 1000(501 males
and 698 females) Ugandans.



-- Status: The group accounted for all funds. Fishponds are
operating to capacity. This organization has become the model
program for fish farming and has trained other community-based
organizations.

-- Grantee: Sisters of the Heart Sewing Club

-- Project Activity: Purchase six sewing machines to train women in
tailoring and quilt making. The group bought the machines and more
women are enrolled in their training. The project is benefiting
200 women.



-- Status: The group accounted for all funds. Sewing machines are
now being used by the women for their tailoring and quilting.






6. Project Number: SSH-09-617-06



-- Grantee: Hadassah Primary School

-- Community contribution: $2,650 for land and labor.



-- Project Activity: Poultry project to support Hadassah Primary
School generate income for the school to feed the students, acquire
scholastic materials and pay for the school operating costs. Funds
were used for the poultry house construction to purchase equipment,
feed, and layer chicks. The project is expected to benefit 178
children (75 boys and 103 girls).



-- Status: The building is completed and water and electricity
connected. Chicks will be delivered in Jan 2010 and the project
will begin generating income. Small Grants Coordinator is working
with the grantee to process receipts to liquidate the expenditures.

-- Project Activity: Purchase beehives and bee harvesting kits.
The group used the first phase advance to buy the beehives and the
second phase advance will be used to purchase the harvesting kit.
This activity will benefit approximately 336 people (154 males and
182 females).

8. Project Number: SSH-08-617-007

-- Project Activity: Establish a community garden and install a
rain harvesting water tank. Phase one of the grant paid for seeds,
water tank installation, garden tools, and part of a training
course on growing vegetables. Phase two of the grant is covering
training on harvesting, marketing, and planting renewable seeds
collected after the harvested crops. This activity will benefit
approximately 226 people (117 males and 109 females).



-- Status: The group accounted for all funds. The gardens have
been planted.
