(S/N) Presidential Spokesman Dino Djalal told the DCM on
February 19 that Indonesia would urge the Government of Iran
to release the three Americans detained in Iran on
humanitarian grounds (reftel C). Former Developing Eight
(D-8) Secretary General Dipo Alam (now Cabinet Secretary
Minister) will travel to Tehran on March 1 as part of a
series of outgoing courtesy calls with D-8 country leaders.
Alam is scheduled to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister
Manouchehr Mottaki and possibly President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad. Djalal told us that on behalf of the Government
of Indonesia (and not the United States),Alam would urge
Iran to release the detained Amcits on humanitarian grounds
and urge Iran not to use the detained Americans for political
gain. Indonesia has helped with similar situations in the
past, including helping secure the release of several South
Koreans from Taliban custody in 2007.
