1. EconOff delivered reftel points to Mr. G. Piyasena,
Secretary of Sri Lanka's Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic
Resources, on February 2, and followed up on February 8.
Piyasena noted that a representative from the Sri Lankan
Embassy in Manilla would attend the CITES meeting, although
he could not provide a name. He also said his Government was
in 'general agreement' with the U.S. position on the proposed
shark protection Memorandum of Understanding (MoU),although
his team of experts were still reviewing the language and
crafting the government's official position. Piyasena
emphasized though that Sri Lanka agreed that more needed to
be done to protect shark species and that the U.S. proposal
was 'very strong.'
