1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.

2. (U) During the January 16-23 period, one security official was
killed and another was injured in clashes in Batman province on
January 17. The total number of security force casualties for the
year through January 23, is one killed and one injured.

3. (U) During the same period, two PKKers were captured in Hakkari
province on January 16, and four surrendered in Sirnak province on
January 20. According to official TGS website figures, through the
third week of January, the number of PKK militants killed this year
is zero, the number of those captured is six. The number of those
who surrendered is seven.
