1. On September 9, the General Assembly (GA),by two oral
decisions, endorsed the recommendations of the
Secretary-General that were previously endorsed by the
Security Council in its resolutions 1877 and 1878 (reported
in reference B). The GA's decisions endorsing the Security
Council resolutions authorize the International Criminal
Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the
International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) to extend
the terms of some of their judges until 2010.


2. One decision also authorizes the ICTY to raise the number
of ad litem judges above the limit of 12 to 13 at any one
time and returning to a maximum of 12 by 31 December 2009.
The other decision also authorizes the ICTR to allow two of
its judges to work part time.
