1. The Security Council on July 7 adopted (15-0-0) two
resolutions (1877 and 1878) to authorize the International
Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the
International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) to extend
the terms of some of their permanent judges until 2010.
Resolution 1877 also authorizes the ICTY to raise the number
of ad litem judges above the limit of 12 to 13 at any one
time and returning to a maximum of 12 by 31 December 2009.
Resolution 1878 also authorizes the ICTR to allow two of its
judges to work part time.
2. As instructed in reftel, USUN joined in the consensus
adoption of the resolutions. No delegations spoke. The
issues contained in both resolutions will now be considered
by the General Assembly. Consistent with instructions, USUN
plans to support adoption by the Assembly.
