1. (SBU) Severine Rey in the UN's Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, in response to an
inquiry we made prior to receiving reftel, told us Jan. 15
OCHA is looking closely at the humanitarian situation in
Pakistan, including the NWFP, and has decided to strengthen
its presence in Pakistan and reinforce its teams in Islamabad
and Peshawar, and in particular to provide additional
technical expertise on humanitarian issues and ensure the
appropriate collection and dissemination of information.
Rashid Khalikov, director of OCHA New York, will travel to
Pakistan the last week in January to review first hand the
situation there.
2. (SBU) Mission officers will meet with Khalikov Jan. 21 to
make reftel demarche and inquire more closely about OCHA's
plans for Pakistan.
