1. (U) In diplomatic note number 1684 sent to the Embassy on
May 12, 2009, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its
request for US support for Cherif Sammari, the GOT candidate
for Vice President of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic
Commission (IOC) of the United Nations Organization for
Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO). Mr. Sammari is the
current Head of the Laboratory for Marine Environment at the
GOT's National Insitute for Ocean Science and Technology.
Elections will be held during the IOC's general assembly
session on June 16-25, 2009. Post forwarded Mr. Sammari's
C.V. to IO/UNESCO in May 2009.
