1. (SBU) Environment Ministry Councilor for Global
Environmental Affairs Masaru Moriya told EMIN and EST Chief
March 17 that Japanese Environment Minister Tetsuo Saito
plans to visit Washington May 2 - 5. The Minister is looking
to meet May 4 with EPA Administrator Jackson, Assistant to
the President Carol Browner, CEQ Chair Nancy Sutley, and
Special Envoy Todd Stern. The overall focus of the visit,
Saito's first to Washington as Minister, would be on
cooperation with the U.S. on climate change. He is also
looking to talk with Administrator Jackson about children's
health and the environment. Moriya said the Japanese Embassy
is contacting Washington agencies to seek to arrange the
desired appointments.
