SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - G20 FINANCIAL
MINISTERIAL IN LONDON
1. LEAD STORIES: Front-page items on Monday morning
included Sunday's remarks on a TV show by Prime
Minister Aso, in which he said that he cannot say at
this moment whether a snap election will be held in May
or June.
2. "Ministers' Commitment Is Significant" On the G20
statement that the member states are prepared to take
whatever action is necessary until growth is restored,
the liberal Mainichi editorialized (3/16): "When
gathering in London on April 2, the leaders of the G20
must back up their ministers' pledges with specific
actions.... If an agreement at the upcoming summit
lacks substance, international trust in the G20 will be
lost."
3. "Stronger Coordination Is Necessary within G20" The
business-oriented Nikkei insisted in an editorial
(3/16): "The financial ministers of the G20 shared a
strong commitment to fighting all forms of
protectionism. If self-centered protectionism gains
momentum, global trade and economy will shrink. It is
imperative for the G20 leaders to strike a clearer
accord against protectionism."
4. "Summit Must Come up with Specific Action Program"
An editorial in the moderate Yomiuri wrote (3/16): "In
order to make up for the worldwide lack of demand, it
is essential for the G20 members to take coordinated
actions, including bold fiscal spending. The Europeans,
as well as the emerging economies, are called upon to
devise additional pump-priming measures."
